The literal translation is “Thunderstone.”
The term perfectly describes the two breeds with which Dondersteen Kennel was founded (Miniature Dachshund, Wirehaired Kaninchen, and Norfolk Terrier), which are known for being little mischievous, yet charming and adorable rascals.
Since I was very young, my great passion has been dogs and other animals. I am in love with my dogs and proud of their successes.
Merlijn Brenninkmeijer

Merlijn Brenninkmeijer is the creator of the cage-free dog accommodation concept, which stemmed from her empathy for dogs confined in kennels.
A lifelong animal lover, she knew there had to be a happier way to provide accommodation for dogs.
She quickly learned a very important fact: all dogs are inherently pack animals and social by nature. This means they can get along with unfamiliar dogs in a new environment, as long as they are part of a balanced pack.
Merlijn discovered that by evaluating each dog first and following the steps of a careful introduction, pack socialization, and consistent leadership, a balanced pack can be created and maintained in a 24-hour daycare facility, which is the key to the success of the Dondersteen Resort formula.
Merlijn also has another wonderful attribute that has had a profound effect on the personality of Dondersteen Resort: her belief that everything she does in life must be top-class. Simply being cage-free was not enough; everything at Dondersteen Resort had to convey the feeling of a first-class resort.
The effect of this belief can be seen in every corner of the Resort, and new clients often comment, “My dog is staying at a better resort than I did on my vacation.“

Our kennel, Dondersteen Kennel, has achieved multiple successes with both breeds over the years, including championships from various countries, group winners, BIS, Monographic, World, and European titles.
